From the Archives: We raised this Canandaigua Lake Home in 2007. Part of what makes it interesting, is its combination of antique industrial salvaged and fresh sawn Douglas fir timbers. There are several reasons we might mix old and new: reclaimed timbers can cost 5-20% more and so a mixture allows homeowners to have a few key pieces for show and still stay on budget; a design may call for timber sizes not readily available in reclaimed and so fresh timbers are included to make up the shortfall; and finally, a mix of timbers can simply create a cool design aesthetic.
