We’re designing this upstate NY home with passive solar characteristics, such as overall orientation and massing, fenestration and interior/exterior materials and colors. In order to take advantage of solar heat gain in the winter months, the southern façade will feature a collection of windows. In the summer, when the sun is higher in the southern sky, the overhangs will provide shade to minimize solar gain through those same windows. We’ve used the square footage efficiently to create low volumes with cozy, comfortable living spaces.
