Mike Westgard works on a bladed scarf, on a curved timber. Not an easy task. The left side of this image shows the two members to be joined. The opposite (right) side shows an acceptable tolerance. The resulting keyhole (the square hole in the middle) will be "keyed" with two opposing wooden wedges, likely a hardwood such as oak, which will keep the scarf tight over time.
