New Energy Works Timberframers
Timber frame homes, post & beam homes, trusses, timbers, custom design/build timberframers using recyled and sustainable wood. Come to one of our open houses or raisings to see what we are all about.
A thoughtfully designed entry using reclaimed timber, in this case Douglas fir can change the facade of almost any existing home. Here the entry design is repeated for the detached garage to unify and balance the entrance.
With the ease that comes from years of experience and dedication to their craft, our timber framers pound hardwood pegs through the mortise and tenons of this Douglas fir king post frame.
The September 2009 issue of Timber Home Living features both a floor plan from our design group perfect for empty nesters as well as a several page spread featuring an interview with Ty Allen, our design group manager, on the process of timber frame home design. If you'd like to read the articles, click here.
This custom Douglas fir kitchen, a collaboration between our NEWwoodworks and interiors group, provides ample work space for multiple chefs to cook and entertain at the same time.
Finger Lakes Cultural and Natural History Museum Project is one step closer to reality. Supporters recently celebrated the announcement of their official NY State Charter. Next steps will be to find the perfect site and raise funding. George Slocum (one of our clients) kicked off the campaign with a generous financial pledge and his commitment to assist the effort. The Museum will surely be an asset to our upstate community's economy and culture. For more info please visit: www.fingerlakesmuseum.org

Mike Beganyi, longtime employee and our north eastern timber frame designer and consultant, took this photo from his cell phone on his way to a bicycle ride on the west side of Middlebury Gap, just up the road from Middlebury, Vermont.
In 1993 we build this classic home and workshop for Fran and Charles Hoehn. It was our first "matrix wall", our own combination of cellulose and rigid foam sidewalls. Charles comments that he uses 10 face cord of wood a year for both. The furnace never turns on.
As is the tradition in our craft, we hand carve the year and sometimes a personal phrase in each of our frames. It's a custom we uphold and clients enjoy for generations.
Company cheerleader, team leader, marketing guru – Jennifer wears many hats and always with a smile. Using Skype she walks the boss around to see operations on our 14 acre facility. Inspired by the curiosity of her three boys(2 starring in Aliens in the Attic), her husband Will's rock star musings, and the writings of Seth Godin, it's only on the paved hills of upstate New York that her cadence gets to catch up with the pace of her creativity.
Pittsford, New York is home to a unique whitewater kayak venue developed on a bypass channel around Lock 32 of the Erie Canal. After writing a successful grant application, New Energy Works is now assisting the Genesee Waterways Center with taking the venue to the next level
We created this four-story timber frame lighthouse as part of a home we designed and built on Cayuga Lake for clients with a love for everything nautical. It has canted walls with a porthole window and circular watch on top boasting a genuine installed US Coast Guard beacon.
Jonathan and Maxine hosted an Earth Advantage class comprised of approximately 25 designers and builders from Portland, Oregon. The group spent part of their Saturday afternoon at the site as the couple discussed the intricacies of building a sustainable and craft intensive home. This was the second class they've held, we're hoping for more. If their students' kind words and enthusiasm were a gauge, we're certain to be spending many a Saturday with talented and environmentally minded folk from the design/build industry.
Many thanks to our friends at Eileen Fisher for sending along this image of their newest store in Chevy Chase, MD featuring reclaimed oak flooring by Pioneer Millworks.
Peeled larch posts support an entry porch complete with boot scrubber on Dave and Kate’s home in upstate New York. The live edge siding on expansive wings creates a central front entry/exit for family and friends.
This guest house frame of Douglas fir will provide organized, open spaces with grand views of the lake framed by the character of the reclaimed posts inside.
We often have interesting loads of wood rumble into the yard. Here Alex checks out a large Ash log that, while not reclaimed from an old barn or industrial building, was salvaged from a home by a thoughtful tree removal service. Once our NEWwoodworks shop gets a hold of it, this log will take on a new expression as custom cabinets or even a big family table.
Extra, extra, read all about it! The summer issue of Rochester Magazine features one of our newly completed lake homes. The article spans two spreads and highlights our passion for designing sustainable, craft-intensive homes. We'd be happy to send or email you a copy of the article, just click here or give us a call.
This New Energy Works designed kitchen was custom crafted by NEWwoodworks. The cabinets are made of reclaimed, old growth, Australian jarrah wood, the countertops are reclaimed curly maple, and the beams are Douglas fir reclaimed from a building built in the early 19th century. The home is located in upstate New York and is currently for sale.
Jeff Jones, an architect with the Wilkes-Barre, PA office of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, stopped in to tour our NY shop with Ty Allen and Julie Beatson of our architectural design division. We think the joke started like this: "A designer and two architects walk into a bar..."
There are occasions where design calls for painted timbers. While we enjoy letting the wood speak for itself, there is something to be said for the visual interest and beauty dark green timbers, posts and railings offer against natural wood ceilings, floors and siding.
We're often asked if we have a signature tell-tale sign that reveals one of our frames from another. The answer is in the details. This example shows chamfered edges on all posts and undersides of horizontal members, knee braces and quarter radius edges on the topsides of all members of this Douglas fir king post frame.
Meet Megan and Jack. Megan is our marketing specialist. Among her many talents and responsibilities, she's at ease jumping, doing flying lead changes, and collection work --she's a pretty darn good equestrian, too. Though she's chatty and outgoing and friends with EVERYONE, Megan claims she's private and shy. We almost believed her until we saw what she could jump with Jack, a Percheron cross that stands a tall 17.2 hands.
Sketches help us to quickly explore plan ideas during the early phases of the design process.
We built this home (now for sale) in Webster, NY on a bluff overlooking Lake Ontario. Care was taken to maximize the views, including a tower or 'aerie' to enhance the lofty feeling. The aerie is located a few steps up from the loft, and serves as the perfect away space to enjoy panoramic views of the lake.
It is our tradition to place a pine bough on the highest peak of a newly raised timber frame. This is done to honor the wood and to bless the structure. Since this frame lives on a hillside surrounded by acres and acres of New York's finest concords, we thought it only apropos to pay our hommage with a grape vine.
Liam and Willa celebrate the end of school as all elementary kids should with cake and ice cream. Unfortunately for Liam his cake is earmarked for another guest. Congratulations to all of our kids who moved up a grade or graduated on to new adventures.
A dream realized. Holly & Willy pose in front of their newly raised timber frame home surrounded by the "Vine and Branches" of Finger Lakes wine country.
High craft meets functionality in this ‘his and hers’ bath. Reclaimed from woolen mills in Australia, Jarrah wood lives its second life here as a custom self-standing linen closet and vanity from NEWwoodworks.
We recently raised a timber frame addition for Debbie and Denis, owners of Second Nature Academy in Nashua, New Hampshire. Mike Beganyi and family dropped in to check out the project. Debbie gave a tour of the barnyard – Ava and Jen are checking out the Alpacas while daddy sneaks in a timber frame shot.

Hello, and thanks for visiting.
For over twenty years,
New Energy Works has been one of the nation's preeminent
timber frame home builders. We offer a range of services
including timberframe design, fine woodworking, timber
frame enclosure services utilizing SIP's and of course,
some of the most elegant and lyrical timber frames in
the industry.
Weve had the
privilege of working with some great clients. Some have
been struggling young couples who want a modest home
in the Finger Lakes region of New York others
have been high-end architects and builders creating
magnificent lodges high in the mountains of Colorado — others still are interested in building in Portland, Oregon, one of the greenest states in the US.
Their common denominator is the love of fine wood, elegant
design, sustainable design and old-world craftsmanship.
We hope that you'll
explore our website and revisit it regularly. In the
years that we've been online, we've found this site
to be an invaluable design resource, one that has evolved
and improved through input from people like you. We
always appreciate your comments - keep in touch.
